Frequently Asked Questions
General
No. While many of our members are alumni, we welcome friends, family members (including parents of Penn Staters) and fans. Both members and non-members of the alumni association are invited to attend most chapter events.
We offer a variety of activities throughout the year, including football watch parties, a freshman send-off, happy hours, Baltimore-area sporting events, career development opportunities, and charitable fundraising events. Most events are free with the exception of non-PSU “ticketed” sporting or social events.
There are no membership dues for our local chapter. The Penn State Alumni Association (PSAA) encourages alums (and friends) to pay for an annual or lifetime membership HERE (link). And if you’re retired, there are lower rates for seniors. In addition, recent graduates of Penn State receive a free 1-year membership to PSAA. The association supports local chapters like ours by providing a portion of membership dues to us annually.
Yes. Community service and philanthropy are central to our mission. We support local and national charities including THON (make the word THON link to PSU THON website), Toys for Tots (LINK), and the Polar Bear Plunge (LINK).
Alums can volunteer in many ways, including helping at events, serving on committees, supporting fundraising efforts, mentoring students, and assisting with community service projects. To serve on our board, or a committee, you must be a member of the Penn State Alumni Association. Board involvement helps you develop leadership skills and applied skills that (event planning, marketing) can help you advance in the organization where you work full-time! Elections for the board are held annually, and interested members are encouraged to reach out to current board members for additional information.
Yes! Each year, the chapter awards one or more scholarships to a current Penn State student. Scholarship funding comes from chapter fundraising activities and donations, helping support student success and strengthening the connection between alumni and the university.
Yes. We host a few events each year that focus on some aspect of professional development. Penn State also makes recordings of similar sessions available HERE (link to PSAA career Zoom recordings).
Participation provides opportunities to cheer on our Nittany Lions with fellow fans, to build friendships, expand your professional network, support charitable causes, attend social and sporting events, and make a meaningful impact through scholarships and student support.
